Description
Sea Smoke at Thatcher Island lighthouse. The temperature was -4F degrees and with the winds gusting, the wind chill dropped to a balmy -38F. The order of the day was layers and covering exposed skin. We were working the Thacher Island Lighthouses from 6:19 to 6:55 so with 25 minutes in the subzero temps, my thumbs were in pain, my mustache was ice covered and my batteries were unresponsive, a good morning, I would say!
The twin lights of Thacher Island are the oldest set of twin lights still in commission off the coast of Rockport and Gloucester harbors.
This is the North tower so it blinks with a white light while the South tower blinks red.
Cape Ann was almost the second village in the colonies back in 1623 but the attempt failed in 1626 due to the harsh conditions. They moved south to set up in Salem Massachusetts which became the second city in Massachusetts. But people soon came back around 1642.
