Description
Some may wonder what a Rhode Island Whaleboat in Autumn is... The orange and yellow of autumn fall colors were reflecting on the water at the top of the image. I was down in Rhode Island to capture the fall colors but as sometimes happens, I get sidetracked. My Ancestors settled Nantucket which is an island off the coast of Massachusetts. Many of them were whalers, teachers and inventors. This small craft would be similar to those carried by the whaleboats of the 1800s that cruised the Atlantic and Pacific ocean hunting for the magnificent mammels for their oil. The sailors would set off in small boats likes this to approach a whale that was 5-7 times the length of the boat and outweighed the boat by many tons. Talk about brave and somewhat foolhardy men. When they did harpoon this monster of the deep they would be taken on a Nantucket Sleigh Ride. The whale would try to swim off taking the boat with him/her and the boat could attain speeds of 20 knots and only the swiftest ships of the day could go so fast and only with near hurricane winds to drive it. Today it is at rest in the calm waters of the Rhode Island bay.
