Description
Mount Rushmore is carved out of the granite of South Dakota. It was sculpted by Danish-born Gutzon Borglum and his son. The four presidents are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. It was started in order to promote tourism in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. Mount Rushmore is today one of the most popular National Monuments in the country.
I had retired from the Airforce and I bought an RV and was visiting as many of the National parks as I could. The Grand Canyon took my breath away for the sheer enormity of it but Mount Rushmore took the lead as it was created by man and just made me stand there in awe.
