Description
Great Horned Owl - Bubo virginianus. Great Horned Owls can vary in color from a reddish-brown to grey or black and white. This Great Horned owl was injured so he was easy to photograph. I've rarely been able to find an owl in the wild as they are nocturnal and silent except when making their calls. The male's resonant territorial call "hoo-hoo hoooooo hoo-hoo" can be heard over several miles during a still night.
The name Great Horned Owl is derived from tufts of feathers that appear to be "horns" which are sometimes referred to as "ear tufts" but have nothing to do with hearing at all.
