Description
This angle to get Wood Island life-saving station and Whaleback Lighthouse in the same shot takes a long lens.
I was over in Kittery Maine at Pepperrell Cove and shot this at 400mm. This makes Whaleback Lighthouse look like it's connected to Wood Island's life-saving station. This is an optical illusion because in reality the lighthouse as a little of a quarter of a mile away.
My only issue was finding somewhere to set up my tripod to get a nice steady shot and waiting for the sun to set and see if I would get any color in the sky. Wood Island Station has stood here at the mouth of the Piscataqua River for over 111 years.
The US Life Saving Service (a predecessor to the US Coast Guard) who would wait with small rowing boats to go out to help mariners in distress in terrible conditions year round. In 2011 a restoartion effort was started and today you will see a much nicer version. This image is so we don't lose the past either.
