By the early 1900s and the advent of electricity electric lights became popular for Christmas trees. The low ceilings kept the heat down in the room with the people and a fireplace in most room was necessary to help people be comfortable. It was also a sign of wealth to have lots of fireplaces. Paintings of past family members were common in the living room and would lend an air of walth to the home.
