The trees would be decked out with birds or silver tinsel to reflect the candle light or the fireplace. Usually in the 1700s to the late 1800s there would even be lit candles on the trees. By the early 1900s and the advent of electricity electric lights became popular for Christmas trees. The low ceilings kept the heat down in the room with the people and a fireplace in most room was necessary to help people be comfortable. It was also a sign of wealth to have lots of fireplaces. Paintings of past family members were common in the living room and would lend an air of walth to the home.
