Description
Smuggler's Notch was created millions of years ago by the receeding glaciers. Along either side of the impossibly narrow road lie boulders knocked loose from mount Mansfield above and these boulders are the size of a good sized home. So they stay where they are and the road was carved around all these boulders. You can see here the rock is connected to more than the earth as they have grown apart of the rock face in search of water and food. You can wilk the trails and avoid traffic and stand next to these Behemoths under the Vermont fall foliage. Motorcycles are the best vehicles for these turns but as long as you are patient, you can make your way up and marvel at the landscape on the way up. The best way to photograph the Notch is to park at the upper car lot and walk the trails back down. If you walk down on the road be aware that there is no sidewalk and your comfort zone will be shared by cars and trucks making their way up and down the Notch. Also this is a mountain trail (even if paved) and expect to pause to catch your breath many times on the way back up to your car. I know I had to stop several times.
