WhaleBack Lighthouse moonrise by Jeff Folger. Whaleback Light is located offshore of Fort Foster and Wood Island in Kittery, Maine, at the entrance to the Piscataqua River and Portsmouth Harbor. the first structure built on Whaleback ledge or Whale's back ledge wasn't built there until 1820. But since 1820 and from then on many a ships master were very happy that this lighthouse was present to warn of the deadly rocks lying just below the surface.
