I find that catching a Sunrise on Rockport Harbor is the best part of any day. Between May and August, sunrise or predawn is the one time you can have the place to yourself. Maybe another photographer but no tourists usually get up this early. I work fulltime so I don't make it here all that often and maybe only once or twice a summer. So I make the most of it. The sunrise is hard to photograph with the sun fully up and in the frame. It will always make the rest of the scene much darker by comparison. The best way to tone down the sun is by using slit ND filters. But in a scene such as this one it would affect everything above the horizon. So I used HDR or High Dynamic Range which basically blends 3 images taken in rapid succession, then they are blended together. This way all the buildings and boats are not dark and silhouetted by the brightness of the sun.
