Description
Salem Massachusettsâs Winter Island is the home to Fort Pickering and Fort Pickering Lighthouse which is at the mouth of Salem Harbor. The sunset was dramatic with the recent passing storm clouds passing to the other side of Marblehead and moving out to the open ocean. The tide was high as I climbed down on the rocks, trying to not slide into the water with my camera gear.
Pickering light is a Navigational light since mariners will line up on Baker Island light and Pickering light to find the harbor mouth and once inside the harbor they have the red beacon of derby light at the end of Derby wharf.
Fort Pickering Light is also known as Winter Island Lighthouse. It was built in 1871 and discontinued by the Coast Guard in 1969. With Fort Pickering built at the mouth to the harbor (originally Fort William, for King William in the 1750s and then Queen Anne and finally named for the local town hero, Colonel Timothy Pickering
It was relit as a private aid to navigation by the City of Salem in 1983.
