A Storm approaching Schooner Fame as she returns to her dock at Pickering Wharf. A dramatic sky and sunset light up Pickering Wharf and Salem in the late afternoon. The South River is but a shadow of it's former self. Today only a few shallow draft ships can travel up to just this side of Congress Street. which marks the end of the wide channel. In the 1700s and early 1800s 100-200 ton ships could sail up the river and deliver goods to their owners wharves. That was the golden age of Salem Massachusetts.
