Description
A seagull takes a chance to rest before the massive Humpback whale heads back to the bottom to scare up another meal. Sometimes the Humpback will rapidly come to the surface and do what we call breaching. This is usually done during the mating season and not when in search of food. What you see here is an example of bubble netting. This whale is in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and he is feeding. The humpback whale will take in a lot of air and make its way to the bottom where the humpback whale will expel the air below a school of krill (small fish) and all the air creates bubbles and when the bubble (net) engulfs the fish it confuses them and the whale will follow them up to the surface where the whale will open his mouth and engulf as many as he can. At the surface, the water will filter through his baleen keeping the fish.
