Salem's Maritime heritage by Jeff Folger. The Customs house dates back to 1819 and was the 13th and final Customs house here in Salem. The Hawkes house in colonial yellow sits next door and was built by Elias Hasket Derby in 1780. But for some reason, just two years later Elias and his family moved from the next door home of the Derby house and instead of moving into the brand new home next door, they moved into a home on Essex street.
