Visions of the night
Hurricane Sandy hit's the east coast and Pickering lighthouse at the mouth of Salem Harbor which you see in the foreground warns of danger and the red light of Baker island lighthouse can be seen in the distance. The two lighthouses are navigational aids to finding the harbor entrance in the dark.
A new england lighthouse, Fort Pickering lighthouse harkens back tot he Revolutionary war. Fort Pickering lies on Winter Island which today is a wonderful place to go and enjoy the beach, lighthouse, boat launch and camp grounds. This used to be a Massachusetts Coast Guard station and when I was young I would hear the PBY rescue aircraft take off as they taxied past Fort Pickering Lighthouse. This lighthouse is Salems second lighthouse as inside the harbor lies Derby lighthouse at the end of Derby wharf.
Derby lighthouse is a part of the National Park Service.
