Description
Looking down Derby Street by Jeff Folger. A foggy morning walk along Derby street in Salem Massachusetts provides a quiet stroll among the historic waterfront homes of Salem. The Derby House is back further off the street and as the home of the first millionaire in the country. The wealthy usually could afford to have a larger lot of land and build their homes further back from the noisy street. The West India Good store was built and owned by Capt Henry Prince who bought the Derby House in 1796 from Elias Hasket Derby. The store is said to have good for storage and sale like pepper, coffee, water buffalo hides and tortoise shells that Capt. Prince imported from the East Indies. The name of the shop "West India Goods Store" was generic to any store that sold these goods.
