Description
Hawthornes Grimshawe by Jeff Folger. This is actually the Peabody home circa 1807 where you would have found Nathaniel Peabody and his wife Elizabeth and their three daughters. The daughters Elizabeth, Mary and Sophia along with three brothers grew up in this house. The father was a dentist but not well off and his wife was big on education. She impressed this on her daughters. Elizabeth taught school and her sister Sophia helped her. Mary went on to marry Horace Mann an educational reformer, Nathaniel Hawthorne first met Sophia here at this house and within a few years they were married. The Grimshawe house borders the Charter cemetery also known as the Old Burying ground and the oldest cemetery in Salem. This is how one expects a house next to a cemetery to look...
