A Golden autumn in Vermont at the Creamery Covered Bridge, This Vermont covered bridge can be found in Brattleboro Vermont. It isn't used anymore and has been by-passed. I thought I would by-pass the normal open portal view of either end and instead focus on the view from the side. The lattice work painted dark against the red painted side panels gave a nice contrast. These bridges were a mainstay of life in the new colonial colonies and as we spread across New England and eventually the fledgling United States we would build covered bridges all across the USA.
But as we moved forward in technology, we stopped building these wooden bridges in favor or steel and concrete because they are more permanent. Unfortunately while steel and concrete bridges can carry heavier loads, they don't last nearly as long. Many of these bridges will be around 100 years where as a modern bridge may only stand 30-50 years Those that stand longer are constantly being maintained.
Today Vermont only has about 100 of these testaments to our building heritage left still standing nut many get face lifts now as we have come to recognize this link to our past.
This Vermont covered bridge was Constructed in 1879 of spruce lumber. its original wood shingles have been replaced with slate; and corrugated metal sheeting covers the roof over the sidewalk whose pitch follows that of the main roof. Two guy cables have been strung from the western side of the bridge to the river bank to provide additional lateral support for the superstructure.
