Description
I've been coming to Gloucester for years and always admired the rusty red building on the for side of Gloucester harbor. I first saw it with my Dad in 2003 after I retired from the Airforce. He started taking me to all his favorite places. My Dad loved tall shipps and built many models of them. I noticed and photographed this red building and each time I came to Gloucester over the years. Built in 1863 the Copper Paint Manufactory was also known as the Tarr and Wonson Paint Manufactory. The company was the first to invent copper based paint to prevent the fouling of the bottom of ships. Wooden ships whether commercial fishermen or warships quickly pickup Barnacles (balanus glandula) along with other marine life that stick to the bottom of ships. This slowed the speed of a boat or ship dramatically and it was this company in Gloucester, MA that invented this paint that prevented this "fouling" for up to a year and is still made today.
