Description
Smuggler's Notch under Vermont fall foliage. A simple drive up Smuggler's Notch has claimed many an unwary truck driver who didn't realize that these cutback turns are not made for anything but automobiles. Even my full size Chevy truck almost fell victim to the Notch's ravenous appetite for vehicles. Imagine a 18 wheeler heading up only to realize that he now needs to back down in reverse... and yes it does happen more than you would think. Motorcycles are the best vehicles for these turns but as long as you are patient, you can make your way up and marvel at the landscape on the way up. The best way to photograph the Notch is to park at the upper car lot and walk the trails back down. If you walk down on the road be aware that there is no sidewalk and your comfort zone will be shared by cars and trucks making their way up and down the Notch. Also this is a mountain trail (even if paved) and expect to pause to catch your breath many times on the way back up to your car. I know I had to stop several times.
