Artist's Description
Dawn light on Pine Sentinel bridge by Jeff Folger. I arrived here with a fellow photographer and to get this kind of light in the autumn, you have to get to the Flume parking lot very early. This covered bridge of walking bridge drived it's name from the ninety foot tall pine tree that stood at the edge of the chasm. It was blown down in the hurrican of 1938 and workman took a sixty foot section to become a walking plank to cross the gorge on. They took other trees that had been blown down to make the footbridge over the original pine and preserve it. The bridge is put together with wooden pegs. The shingles were made by John G. Welch and Old Joe Poloquin who was also known as Indian Joe. Sentinel covered bridge was transferred to the state of New Hampshire in 1948. This bridge is only accessible by pedestrians.
