The Saugus Iron Works is a National Historic site due to its being considered the birthplace of the steel and iron industry in the colonial Amaerica. As the ironworks closed down in 1670, the former workers dispersed and they and their descendants established other iron producing foundries which was critical to the development of other industries in the colonies. The Iron works is a prominent example of the colonial revival and twentieth-century American preservation movement.
