Description
An Arizona rest stop on the Arizona-New Mexico border... This is the old Route 66 that follows much of Route 40 through the western United States. Actually you get off I-40 and take the frontage road back parallel to the highway and stop at Chief Yellow Horse's empoium. We stopped in and he seemed very happy to see that someone would get off the highway and stop in his establishment. He inherited it from his father and he from his father. Or so he tells me. We didn't buy a lot but he said his wife makes the jewerly, so Lisa bought a few pieces. I as you can imagine walked around with my camera and took pictures. Route 66 is the forntage road and his livelyhood is based on people being intrigued enough to stop trying to get somewhere fast and take a break at his location. Back in the 40s through the 60s traffic would have been travelling the frontage road right past his place and this would have brought in many more tourists traveling to see the big National parks to the west. We were heading for the Grand Canyon so we only stayed about 30-45 minutes and we too were back to the future or at least the current day and on our way to the Grand Canyon.
