Description
Nauset Lighthouse on Cape Cod chart by Jeff Folger. I love to visit Cape Cod and the different lighthouses that stretch from one end of Cape Cod to the other. In the days of wooden sailing ships, transporting goods around the world, the rocky shoreline was a very real danger and keeping off the rocks was not always easy.
Nauset Light is officially known as Nauset Beach Light. It stands watch in Eastham Massachusetts. The lighthouse is a red and white tower topped with a black lantern room.
The lighthouse used to be at the edge of the bluff overlooking the Cape Cod National Seashore. The National Seashore is a National Park property that was created in 1961 by John F. Kennedy. It encompasses 43,607 acres in Massachusetts, including ponds, woods and beachfront of the Atlantic coastal region.
Before Nauset lighthouse was moved down from Chatham it was a twin light there. When it was decided that the three sisters (3 shorter wooden lighthouses) would be removed, Nauset was dismantled and brought to sit above on a high bluff overlooking the seashore.
The three sisters were moved a short distance down the road and can still be visited. Due to erosion, the lighthouse and keepers house were moved from the edge of the bluff in 1995 and brought 300 back from the edge.
The lighthouse is now a National park property and is open in the summer for tours by National park rangers.
