Description
Abbot Hall on Marblehead harbor at Christmas by Jeff Folger. Abbot Hall was built around 1877 and inside hangs the painting of the Spirit of 76, painted by Archibald MacNeal Willard. A plaque discovered at the Philidelphia Navy Yard proclaims Marblehead to be the birthplace of the American Navy. I've head the deep resonating bong of the bell in the clock tower over many years. The mechanism is still wound by hand and when I looked into this, there were a group of Marbleheaders called the old cranks. They would climb up to the top of the tower each week and each would take turns winding the clock. This image was taken on Christmas Morning just as the sun was working its way into the sky. At this time of the year most all boats are pulled from the harbor and only a couple of Lobster boats are tough enough to weather the winter storms. Christmas 2015 broke the standing records for temperature and I saw 70 on the thermometer
