Description
Spring arrives in the woods near my place and during my walks on the lonely paths I find many different plants. Most of these plants are not native ones and were probably brought here back when the colonials arrived back in the 1600s from Europe. This blue wild iris is one such variety. The iris takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species. A more common name is a blue flag or flags given to some of the species of irises. The scientific name for this iris is Iris germanica and it grows from creeping rhizomes under the ground. I've never found more than a few of these in wet areas along the trails of Salem woods. Sometimes I will spot them in late April but generally after it warms up in May they make their colorful arrival.
