Description
View from the old north bridge by Jeff Folger. A young British soldier who is entertaining the visitors to the Minute Man National Park is seen to the right of the bridge. The re-enactor volunteers here at the park and takes part in events requiring British soldiers. I almost asked him to march over the bridge but it was enough to imagine the sound of fife and drum as the British arrived that early April morning on 19 April 1775. General Gage had information of both canon and ammunition in the farmhouses near this bridge in Concord Massachusetts. The militia turned out first in small numbers but as the word went out more farmers with pitchforks and muskets appeared on the other side of the bridge. Things grew tense and whether by accident or by a plan, first a shot then several more ring our and members of the militia fall and the cry by Major Buttrick was heard, "Fire, for God's sake, fellow soldiers, fire!" and the rest is history.
