Description
Moonrise over Marblehead lighthouse by Jeff Folger. A full moon rises over New England and as seen from Marblehead harbor. This was considered to be a night of a supermoon. I was over in Crocker park and about 3/4 of a mile away using a 400mm lense. This is what photographers call telephoto compression. It gives the illusion of the moon being much larger and closer to the foreground object. In this case the Moon and Marblehead lighthouse seem to be on top of one another. The original lighthouse on Marblehead Neck was a traditional white tower with a keeper's house. But as newer summer houses were being built in the area, the original tower was less able to be seen by mariners. So in 1895 the existing lighthouse was built. Originally Marblehead light had a fresnel lens but now the lighthouse has a plastic optic. The light was automated in 1960 and the land surrounding the lighthouse is now a park.
Marblehead is a sailing mecca and a picturesque town with many eighteenth century homes and narrow, winding streets. Every year, crowds gather on Marblehead Neck to watch the passing sailboat races. Many people have speculated how much more scenic this picture would be if Marblehead Light was a traditional lighthouse instead of a metal skeleton tower. Edward Rowe Snow wrote in The Lighthouses of New England, " ..it is to be realized that lighthouses are for utility and not for beauty, but in this case it is especially unfortunate that beauty and utility were not combined." To many lighthouse fans, Marblehead Light is unique in New England and thus possesses its own charm.
